And while carpet will fade and change color over time, you can keep it lasting longer by keeping those sun rays off.

The carpeting industry refers to it as sun rot, which is the result of sun exposure. This will start that fading as soon as that carpet gets any natural light. Facts you may not realize about your carpeting and the sun:

• Approximately 40% of carpet fading is from ultraviolet light
• Approximately 25% of carpet fading is from solar heat and visible light
• Approximately 10% of carpet fading is from artificial lighting, heat, humidity, and poor dye

With Ultraviolet radiation accounting for the largest percentage of carpet fading, it is a must to protect your carpet from UV light year round no matter what part of the country you live in. Just about the biggest threat for fading comes from the glass doors and windows that are facing southwest.

However, in a six-month period, carpet that isn’t protected from direct, unfiltered sunlight will have noticeable fading. Keep direct sunlight off of your carpet. Using blinds, curtains, and shades, closing them as needed.
